Polishes used for floors, furniture and shoes commonly come in solid form. These are an emulsion of water with waxes, such as paraffin wax, beeswax or carnauba wax, plus colorings, stabilizers and surfactants. Automotive polishes are usually solvent-based emulsions consisting of petroleum distillates, waxes and surfactants, produced in paste and liquid forms.
To manufacture most polishes, wax is melted and thoroughly liquefied. Surfactants and other ingredients are dispersed into the solvent. The mix is emulsified together. Abrasive materials, if used, are added last to minimize wear to mechanical parts. The emulsion is cooled. The small suspended wax particles solidify and form the product’s finished texture.
